Suggestions on Celebrating a Loved One

Often we are asked what some of the most popular ways are to remember a loved one after he/she has passed. Although there are many ways, here are some of the most popular:

  • Plant a tree or special plant in honor of him/her.

  • Many parks have a dedication plaque or bench on which you may have a special inscription dedicated to your loved one. Often these plaques or benches are placed under a favorite tree or in a special garden. The memorial plaque usually says something to the affect of, "In Loving Memory of ______ (the person's name), 1938-2000" (date of birth and passing) and then a quote or favorite verse after.

  • Create (or have created for you) a newsletter dedicated to your loved one. This newsletter can contain a collage of favorite photos of him/her throughout the years, a little about his/her life, etc.

  • Scatter ashes at sea or at a special location (do confirm the local laws on this in your area)

  • Dedicate and name a star in honor of your loved one. Visit StarRegistry.com or StarFoundation.net to help get you started.

  • jnftrees.com, atlanticyard.com or Christianity.com Allow you to plant a tree in Israel with your loved one's name on it.

  • Light a memory candle at the memorial service or have someone special do the honors. Sometimes there are several candles, each corresponding for a designated family member to light in honor of the passed loved one.

  • Set up a memory table at the reception or service with photos and special remembrances of your loved one. Generally this is done near or at the guestbook table.
